Why Your Branding Photos Should Look Like Your Actual Office

October 15, 2026

Personal Branding in Ladue by Zach Dalin, St. Louis photographer

I've shot branding sessions in a lot of different places over the years, and the ones that get used, actually used, in a pitch deck or on a firm's leadership page, are almost never the ones against a seamless white backdrop. They're the ones where you can tell something about the person's day. A bookshelf behind them. Their hands on a drafting table. The specific chair they sit in every morning. That context does more work than people expect.

I get a lot of calls from founders and professionals around Ladue who want something better than a stiff corporate headshot but aren't sure what that means in practice. Usually what they're describing, once we talk it through, is an environmental portrait. A photo that still reads as polished and professional, but that could only be a picture of them, in their world, doing their thing.

Your office already has what we need

Ladue is full of the kind of professionals this approach is made for. Attorneys with firms on Ladue Road. Financial advisors with quiet, well-appointed offices. Founders running businesses out of beautifully converted houses near the public library. Physicians with practices that feel more like a thoughtfully designed home than a clinic. None of that should disappear behind a gray backdrop.

When I come to a space like that, the first fifteen minutes aren't really about photography at all. I'm walking the office, looking at where the light falls in the afternoon, noticing what's on the walls, figuring out which room actually feels like the person rather than just a conference room they happen to use. Sometimes the best shot comes from a hallway nobody thought twice about.

What makes it feel like branding and not a snapshot

There's a real difference between a candid photo someone took on their phone and a portrait that's been lit and composed with intention. The goal is for the final images to look effortless, like you just happened to be caught in a great moment at your desk, but that effortlessness takes real setup.

A few things I'm always paying attention to during a session like this:

  • Making sure the background supports you instead of competing with you, even in a busy or detailed room
  • Using natural light from windows when it's flattering, and supplementing it quietly when it isn't
  • Getting a mix of posed, confident shots and quieter, in-motion moments so you have range to use across a website, LinkedIn, and print

That range matters more than people think going in. A founder's website often needs a strong, direct portrait for the About page, but the same shoot should also give you something warmer for an email signature or a conference bio, and something with a little movement for social. You don't want to be stuck using one photo everywhere because it's the only one that works.

It's a short drive, and worth the trip either way

My studio is in University City, just a few minutes from most of Ladue, so if a client wants a studio portrait as part of the same session, or needs a cleaner background option alongside the on-location shots, that's easy to fold in. But for most personal branding work, I'd rather come to you. The whole point is capturing something that couldn't have been photographed anywhere else.

If you want to see more of how this kind of session actually looks once it's finished, I keep a full breakdown of the process and examples on my personal branding page. And if you're specifically looking for someone familiar with the area and the kind of professional spaces around it, I've also put together some notes on working with clients in Ladue.

Let's talk about your space

Every office and every founder is a little different, which is exactly why I don't shoot these sessions from a script. If you're curious what this would look like in your own space, reach out through my contact page and tell me a bit about what you're trying to use the photos for. We'll figure out the rest from there.
