The Family Photos That Actually Make It to the Wall

October 19, 2026

Family in Ladue by Zach Dalin, St. Louis photographer

Most family photos never get printed. They live on a phone, get texted around for a week, and then sit in a camera roll next to four thousand other pictures until nobody can find them again. That is the problem I try to solve before the session even starts, not after.

When a family in Ladue calls me, it is almost never just "we want some pictures." It is a new baby, a grandparent who just turned eighty, a kid about to leave for college, a family that finally has everyone in one city for a weekend. There is a reason behind the timing, and that reason is usually what should end up on the wall.

Start with why, not just when

A good family session starts with a conversation about what this moment actually is. Is this the last summer before your oldest leaves home? Is this the first time in three years your whole family has been together? That context changes everything, from how I shoot the session to what I recommend you print afterward.

I ask families to tell me the real story before we ever talk about outfits or location. The photos end up feeling different when they are built around something true instead of a generic "family portrait" checklist.

Where we shoot matters less than you think

I get asked a lot about location, Forest Park, a backyard, a studio setup. Honestly, the setting matters far less than the light and the relationships in front of the camera. Some of my favorite sessions with Ladue families have happened in their own front yard, because that is where the dog runs loose and the kids actually relax.

If you want full creative control over backdrops and lighting, a studio session works beautifully for milestone portraits, especially newborns or anything where you want a clean, timeless look. You can see examples of both approaches on the family portraits page.

What happens to the photos afterward

This is the part people do not think about until it is too late. A gallery of fifty digital images is nice, but it rarely becomes anything. Someone means to order prints, life gets busy, and six months later the photos are still sitting in a folder.

So I build the ordering process around actually finishing the project. That might look like:

  • A custom album designed around the story of that day, not just a random grid of images
  • A series of framed prints sized for a specific wall, often planned out during the consultation before we even shoot
  • A smaller grab-and-go set of prints for grandparents, because they will actually display them

Families in Ladue tend to have the wall space and the intention to do this right, a staircase, a long hallway, a formal living room that has been waiting for the right photo for years. It is a short drive over from my University City studio, and it is one of my favorite kinds of sessions because the final product gets used, not just stored.

Milestones worth planning around

Some sessions make sense on a predictable timeline, a newborn in the first two weeks, a one-year cake smash, a high school senior. Others are less obvious but just as important, a 50th anniversary, a family reunion that only happens once a decade, a move to a new house.

If you are not sure whether your situation counts as a milestone worth documenting, it probably is. The families who end up happiest with their wall art are usually the ones who almost talked themselves out of booking a session at all.

Planning a session near Ladue

If you are in Ladue or nearby and have been meaning to do this for a while, I would rather help you plan it properly than rush it. You can read more about how I work with families in the area on the Ladue page, including typical locations and timing.

The best time to reach out is before the moment passes, not after. If you have a milestone coming up, or you just realized it has been three years since your last real family photo, get in touch and let's talk through what would actually work for your family and your walls.
