The Best Spots in St. Louis for an Engagement Session (And a Few Nobody Thinks Of)

October 8, 2026

Engagement in Clayton by Zach Dalin, St. Louis photographer

I get asked about locations before almost anything else. Couples want to know where to go, what looks good in photos, and whether the place that's trending on Instagram is actually worth the trip. Usually the honest answer is that the best location is the one that means something to you, not the one with the most tags on social media.

That said, St. Louis has real range, and after years of shooting here, I've got opinions.

Forest Park earns the hype

Forest Park is popular for a reason. The Jewel Box has that greenhouse glow in the late afternoon. The art museum steps give you height and symmetry if you want something a little more formal. And the area around the boathouse, especially right before sunset, has this soft gold light that does half the work for me.

The tradeoff is that everyone knows this. On a nice Saturday evening you'll share the park with three other sessions, a wedding party, and someone's quinceanera. I usually suggest a weekday evening or an early Sunday morning if you want it closer to yourselves.

The spots people drive past

Some of my favorite frames haven't come from the obvious places. The brick side streets in the Grove have great texture and almost no foot traffic midweek. The Delmar Loop gives you neon signs and record shops if you two are more into a lived-in, urban feel than a park backdrop. And if you're near Clayton, the quiet residential streets with their old trees and stone facades photograph beautifully without ever feeling staged.

Clayton itself doesn't get enough credit as a session location. It's not a park or a landmark, but the mix of historic architecture downtown, the walkability around Shaw Park, and the short drive in from University City makes it an easy, low-stress option for couples who live or work nearby and don't want to spend their evening fighting traffic to get somewhere else.

Think about the season before the place

A lot of couples pick a location first and worry about timing second, but I'd flip that. Forest Park in October with the leaves turning is a different world than Forest Park in July humidity. The Botanical Garden is stunning in spring bloom but gets crowded fast once word gets out. If you're set on a specific landmark, let's talk about which month gives you the best version of it, not just whichever weekend works for your schedules.

What actually matters more than the backdrop

Honestly, the location matters less than people think. What makes an engagement session feel like you is time, not scenery. I build in enough of it that you stop noticing the camera, which is usually around the twenty minute mark. That's when the real laughing happens, the in-between moments where one of you says something under your breath and the other one cracks up. Those are the photos people end up loving most, not the ones in front of the famous arch backdrop.

If you want to see how different locations actually play out in finished galleries, from downtown streets to the park, it's worth looking through some engagement session work before you lock anything in. It'll give you a better sense of what fits your style than any list of landmarks could.

A few things worth planning ahead

  • Scout your top two locations at the same time of day you plan to shoot, light changes everything
  • Have a simple backup plan for weather, most parks have a covered or indoor option nearby
  • Keep outfits simple and let the location do less talking than you think it needs to

If you're in Clayton or close by and want a second opinion on where to shoot, I'm happy to talk through options based on your style and the time of year. You can find more on sessions specific to the area on the Clayton page, or just reach out directly through the contact page and we'll figure out the right spot together.
